Many classes attended the recent Veterans" Day assembly with their "buddy" read on to learn more about our work with "buddy classes" at East this year.
Each class at East has a "Buddy Class" that is at another grade — for instance, a third grade class might have a first grade "Buddy" class. These "Buddy Classes" may meet at Monday Mornings to start the week together for Work Hard, Be Kind skits or songs. Teachers might also plan for "Buddy Class" time to have their classes come together for partner reading or a project in the art room. We have also arranged for these "Buddy Classes" to attend assemblies together at times when those assemblies are appropriate for a mixed K-4 audience. How wonderful it was to see fourth graders sitting beside their kindergarten "buddies"; at the Veterans' Day assembly earlier this month! The caring and sense of responsibility that was evident for the older students was terrific and it provided a terrific role model for our younger students.
On Monday, November 21st, East School will welcome children's author, Dan Gutman, thanks to the support of the East PTC and the efforts of our Library Media Specialist, Miss Stilwell. Mr. Gutman is known for his My Weird School series and many, many other titles. Mr. Gutman will share presentations about his books with grades 1-4 in the East Galley to speak about his craft and writing process with our East School young authors. He will also take time for read-alouds as he visits in our kindergarten classrooms. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain insights into the work of an author and recognize the parallels to the craft they are developing in their writing.
SAVE THE DATE for the district parent presentation, Emotional Intelligence: The foundations for raising happy and successful children, by Yale University professor, Dr. Marc Brackett. The evening presentation will be held at New Canaan High School on Tuesday, November 29th, at 7PM.
Have a good week ahead and a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends — I am grateful for the caring community we have here at East School!
