The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Summative Assessment is a state-required science assessment for students in eleventh grade. The assessment is designed to measure current levels of student performance in relation to State standards. By virtue of our educational program, which incorporates state standards and expectations, our students are well prepared for this experience.
A testing window by CSDE has been established from late March to early June. Juniors will be utilizing school-provided technology to complete these online assessments. NCHS will administer these assessments to all juniors during science classes from Monday, May 15, 2023-Friday, May 26, 2023. We have chosen these dates to be minimally disruptive as it falls after the completion of Advanced Placement (AP) testing and seniors’ departure for the Senior Internship Program (SIP). While the assessment is untimed, we anticipate most students will complete it within their block period and have set up the schedule accordingly. Any student who does not complete the assessment during this window will pause the test and complete it at a later time.
The information gained from NGSS Assessments will become part of each child’s academic record and can help students to meet a graduation requirement. In addition to providing schools with information about individual student achievement, aggregate performance levels will also be used as sources of comparative data for schools and districts Statewide.
Please do all that you can to ensure your junior is present and on time for the assessment. Since we know that illness and family emergencies may occasionally occur during testing, we will make arrangements for those requiring test make-ups. We encourage you to help your child view the upcoming testing in a positive way – as an opportunity to demonstrate what he/she knows and is able to do. Additional resources regarding Next Generation Science Standards can be found on the state’s website.
