  1. What is the purpose of the NHS?

To provide academically gifted students with an opportunity to reach out and impact their community. We strive to connect our students with enriching activities that will expand their horizons.

2. When are students eligible for membership?

Eligible students will be sent an invitation to apply to the National Honor Society in early February of their Junior year.  To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a member of the junior class, who have completed five semesters, and shall have attended the school equivalent to one semester. Candidates with a comprehensive scholastic average of at least 92 percent will be eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

3. How do I apply for membership in NHS?

Students who are eligible and are interested in applying for membership in NHS are required to complete a membership application. A notice of eligibility will be communicated with the student via email and/or Schoology.

4. When do I apply for membership?

An exact deadline date for applying will be communicated with the student. Membership applications must be completed in full and turned in on or before this deadline date, or the application will not be considered.

5. Besides scholarship, how are members selected to the NHS?

The National Honor Society requires members to demonstrate leadership in and outside of school, perform service to their school and community, possess a character of high morals and ethics, and demonstrate citizenship by their membership in school and community organizations. The New Canaan High School Chapter requires prospective members to list and describe their extracurricular activities, their leadership positions in these activities, their involvement in school and community activities, and the types and number of service hours performed in each of their high school years.

6. Who selects members?

Membership is chosen by the Honor Society Council which is made up of teachers at New Canaan High School.

7. When are members inducted?

Members will receive a letter of acceptance at the end of April early May, inviting them to an induction ceremony hosted by current NHS students in mid-May.

8. Do I have to do 20 hours of community service each year?

Yes - students accepted in their junior year must have 20 hours of service during their senior year to be eligible for recognition of their membership at the graduation ceremony.  If 20 hours of community service hours are not met, members will not walk with the honors of the membership. 9. Can I volunteer to do anything and have it count?

10. Does it cost anything to be a member of the NHS?

Dues are $20 per year.  By paying dues and remaining a member in good standing, you will wear gold National Honor Society cords at graduation and be listed in the graduation program as a member of NHS.
