Dear Saxe Intermediate School Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I hope you had the opportunity to create lasting memories, enjoy the slower pace, and embark on new adventures with your families and loved ones this summer. The hallways have been too quiet without the buzz and excitement that our students and families bring, and I’m looking forward to seeing our school come alive once again!
This year is particularly special as we embark on a new chapter together with the introduction of our Saxe Intermediate School. We are embracing the theme of “Moving Forward, Together,” which captures our commitment to progress and the collective journey we will share as a school community. We aim to foster an environment where every student feels supported, encouraged, and inspired to take steps forward in their daily learning and personal growth.
While our school community has undergone some changes, much will remain the same to ensure a smooth transition for our students. Our 5th and 6th grade start/end times, mini-team (5)/team structure (6), daily schedule, arrival/dismissal procedures and locations, and communication to the intermediate office (formally the LD office) will remain consistent.
As we transition to our new intermediate school, I am pleased to welcome Mr. Steve Bedard as our assistant principal. Mr. Bedard, formerly the assistant principal for the Upper Division at Saxe, brings a wealth of experience to our school. Together, our combined experience spans from kindergarten through 12th grade! This broad perspective enables us to know where our students have been, where they are, and where they’re going. Together, we will ensure a smooth and successful transition from elementary to middle school learning.
To help answer any questions you may have about our Saxe Intermediate staff, we’ve put together a Saxe Intermediate Contact List and a Saxe Intermediate Organizational Chart.
We also made this fun video for our District Facebook and Instagram (@newcanaanps) channels that goes into detail about Saxe Intermediate School. Take a look as our new 5/6th Grade Principal and Assistant Principal answer our student's most pressing questions keep things light and reassuring in this fun Q&A!
Please see additional important information below regarding Saxe Intermediate School
Saxe Intermediate School Hours: The instructional day for students is 9:15am-3:45pm
Supervision begins at 8:55am; students are not to be dropped off prior to 8:55am unless enrolled in our Right at School program
We encourage families to use bus transportation
to ease traffic flow at the start and end of the day. If your child will be dropped off by car in the morning, we will continue to use the Saxe Intermediate entrance off of Farm Road. Students being picked up by car at the end of the day, will continue to use the South Avenue entrance of the building.
Placement & Supply Lists: The PowerSchool Portal will be open in the afternoon on Thursday, August 22 for you to view your child’s placement and see their daily schedule. Our team of teachers and counselors have carefully considered each student’s needs and strengths to make thoughtful class assignments. Our aim is to support the whole child and their academic, social, and emotional growth.
5th and 6th grade supply lists can be found by clicking this link. The 5th grade supply list will be visible on the site. The 6th grade supply list can be found by scrolling down on the page. Please note that bluetooth headphones will not be allowed with our new Phone Free School initiative. Every student should bring wired headphones for use this school year.

Phone Free Schools: Our new “Phone Free Schools” initiative will be introduced at Saxe for the upcoming school year. This initiative will remove access to all personal devices (cell phones, smart watches, Bluetooth earbuds, etc.) during the school day. To create our “Phone Free School,” we will utilize a locking pouch system for all students. The goal of this program is to minimize distractions and enhance focus in the learning environment. As Dr. Luizzi shared, “your support is essential as this initiative is rolled out, and together, we can help create a more engaging educational experience for our students.” We will share more information about our “Phone Free Schools” initiatives in the upcoming weeks after we have launched the school year.
